Me time - Mum's birthday afternoon tea.
My siblings and I recently look our mum for afternoon tea as part of her birthday present. I've been for lots of afternoon teas and to be frank I often think they are pretty overpriced for some sarnies and cakes with a cuppa. Especially in London where you're paying £50-£60 for the basic option on the menu. But the thing I LOVE about afternoon tea is the fact you are able to sit at a table and just have a good old chinwag.
It's not like when you go for lunch and you feel like once you've eaten your food you need to bugger off. Or when you meet someone for coffee and you're in a bustling coffee shop with noise around, feeling like people are watching for you to finish and go so they can nab your table. With afternoon tea you just sit there grazing away on the treats in front of you, often for up to a few hours. This is of course even more special now I am mum to a one year old. Most cups of tea I make end up sitting on the side until they are cold to then be washed down the sink 4 hours later.
We decided at Sopwell house in St Albans as it's nice and local for me.
I left Bella with Phil and met my siblings and Mum there. We went for the classic afternoon tea which included a hot drink and a selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes. I have to say they went the extra mile with nice touches for my mum's birthday.
They were also very forthcoming with offering top ups to everything, asking us several times if we wanted for anything else. Rather suprisingly it was the sandwiches we wanted more of, they were yum.
The scones were absolutely delicious, some of the best i've had!
It was a such a treat to have an afternoon to myself with some of my favourite people, with cakes and tea on the side...what could be better?!
